Immunology Cell Function Service

All cell function tests are performed after consultation with one of the senior immunologists (Dr Brian Jones, 28554147; Dr Eric Chan, 28554149; Dr Janette Kwok, 28554867). When it is agree which evaluations are appropriate, contact the Cell Function Lab (28554178) to arrange a date for the test. On the agreed date, a technician will meet the medical officer and the patient before 9:30 a.m. so that blood can be mixed in special bottles and transported immediately to the laboratory. Blood must be taken aseptically. For most tests a control sample is required ?this should be from an age- and sex- matched volunteer in good health. These arrangements are for patients in Queen Mary Hospital - for other hospitals the specimen must usually be delivered to the laboratory within one hour of collection. Often it is best to arrange for the patient to come to the laboratory for bleeding.

Each report will give the patient's results, control results, the relevant normal ranges and an immunologist's interpretation of the data.

Specimen requirements

The volume of blood required will depend on the patient's white cell count and differential and will be discussed during consultation.
