Cardiothoracic Surgery

Introduction

Before April 1994, we provided thoracic surgical services to the public in Kowloon Hospital for years. Then we moved to QEH and established the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery to include the service of cardiac surgery.

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is one of the three tertiary referral centres in Hong Kong designated for the surgical management of heart and lung diseases. Our team of surgical experts combines leading-edge technology with scientific research to provide comprehensive patient care.

Mission:
  1. Provide safe and cost-effective specialty service to our patients
  2. Provide continuous professional training and maintain our professional standards for doctors, nurses and paramedical staff
  3. Emphasize teamwork and collaboration with other departments

Scope of Services

The Department accepts referrals for both elective and emergency procedures, and provides a full range of adult cardiac operations including surgery for ischemic heart disease, valvular disease, aortic aneurysms and thoracic operations with increasing emphasis on a minimally invasive approach. Approximately 400 bypass surgeries and 300 lung resections are performed each year. Patient education by nurse specialists and physiotherapists is an important feature of our pre-operative preparation. Multi-disciplinary meeting with oncologist, cardiologist, respiratory physician, radiologist are held weekly to discuss the optimal treatment plans for our patients.

Our surgeons are committed to treating heart and lung conditions ranging from the simple to the complex in a patient-focused environment. Surgical innovations include:

  1. Minimal access cardiac surgery which include video assisted mitral valve surgery and hemisternotomy for mitral and aortic valve surgery res
  2. Endovascular stenting for aortic aneuryms. We collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Radiology to achieve excellent results and shorter hospital stay compared to tradition open aortic surgery. With state-of-the-art facility in the Endovascular Operating Centre, this provides a unique opportunity for hybrid operations for
  3. Minimal invasive pectus surgery. With small incisions, we are able to achieve good correction of deformities in many of our patients
  4. Robotic surgery. Tiny incisions are made to achieve the same oncological results for our thoracic patients

Services Hours

We provided 24 hours services for all patients with cardiothoracic needs.
