Milestones of Midwife-led Services in the Prince of Wales Hospital

1984: Promotion of breastfeeding to patients and the public since opening of the Department. To synchronise with the promotion, clinical attachment programmes for midwives were held regularly in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Nursing Studies to enhance staff training

1995: Implementation of independent midwifery services in both outpatient and inpatient settings for low-risk obstetric patients throughout their pregnancies. Services rendered include ultrasonography, antenatal midwife clinic, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care

1997: Establishment of grief counselling service for bereaving patients and their families with mid-trimester abortions, intra-uterine fetal or neonatal deaths

1997: Taking over of the Gestational Diabetes Education Programme from the Diabetes and Endocrine Centre of the Department of Medicine, Prince of Wales Hospital and continuing to promote healthy lifestyle among gestational diabetic mothers

1998: Collaborating with the Department of Psychiatry, Prince of Wales Hospital, in introducing the first large-scale systematic screening and care programme in Asia for postnatal depression

1998: Rolling out of continence care, education and counselling services for gynaecological and obstetric patients to alleviate problems arising from various types of urinary incontinence

1999: Provision of counselling services and psychological support for couples undergoing Assisted Human Reproduction programmes

2001: Extension of obstetrics and gynaecology services to the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital and the North District Hospital
