1. Introduction
The Back Team of MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre (MMRC) aims at providing specialized, holistic quality service to people with back problems.

3. Chronic Back Programme in MMRC (a joint programme between MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre & The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay)

3.1 Team members involved in this programme include:



Orthopaedic surgeon - who leads the team and be responsible for the overall assessment and treatment programme


Occupational therapist - who provides assessment and training in activities of daily living and work areas


Physiotherapist - who performs physical assessment and training, such as posture, body mechanics, stamina and endurance etc


Physiologist - who provides information on the physiological assessment, such as respiratory and cardiac functions


Clinical psychologist - who is responsible for the psychological assessment, adjustment and coping mechanisms to pain


Medical social worker - who provides social and financial assessment, individual and family counselling, job placement
Bioengineer - who carries out assessment and research
Interventional radiologist - who assists in diagnosis of spinal pathologies
Anaesthetist - who performs pain assessment and treatment

3.2 Clients who fulfil the following criteria will be admitted to the programme:

Failed back surgery syndrome


Chronic back pain (> 3 months) without previous surgical intervention or significant organic findings
Age <55

3.3 The programme is a 14 weeks' intensive rehabilitation programme for clients with chronic back problem. The Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Clinical Psychology Departments will be the main service providers in the programme.

In this programme, DKCH will be the main assessor while MMRC is mainly responsible for treatment. Assessments will be done in the 1st week (initial), 8th week (midway) and 14th week (final). Treatment is from the 2nd to 13th week of the programme and is divided into 3 phases.

Phase I - physical conditioning (5 weeks)
Phase II - work conditioning (4 weeks)
Phase III - work readiness (3 weeks)
