Hong Kong Hospital Authority

The Hospital Authority is a statutory body established on 1 December 1990 under the Hospital Authority Ordinance to manage all public hospitals in Hong Kong. We manage 43 public hospitals / institutions, 47 specialist outpatient clinics and 74 general outpatient clinics. As at 31 March 2005, we managed a total of 27,742 hospital beds which represented around 3.8 public hospital beds per 1,000 population. We have 52,600 staffs, and 29,000 of which are clinical. The Authority is responsible for delivering a comprehensive range of primary, secondary and tertiary specialist care and medical rehabilitation through its network of health care facilities. In 2005/2006, there were a total of 1,127,942 inpatient and day patient discharges and deaths, 5,839,664 specialist outpatient attendances, 5,179,200 general outpatient attendances and 2,019,451 accident and emergency attendances.

Health Informatics (HI) Section in Hong Kong Hospital Authority is under Information Technology Services (IT) and Finance Division. Our job is to govern and coordinate the development of Clinical Management Systems (CMS) in the organization for clinical care. Our mission is to build a clinical system for effective and efficient delivery of quality and safe patient care making use of information technology. The section is headed by Dr NT CHEUNG and there are 20 full time staffs to support the health informatics operation for the whole organization. We work in close relation with 600+ IT colleagues and 29,000 front line clinical staffs in the corporation and we also have collaborative projects with the Hong Kong Department of Health, Center of Health Protection and Private Sectors.
