Message from Director
The Hong Kong Cancer Registry was established in 1963 as a population-based cancer registry. We compile reports on cancer statistics using demographic, morphologic and histologic data collected from medical institutions in Hong Kong in strict accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. The main purposes of the Registry are:
-
to establish and maintain a cancer incidence database which provides statistical information for planning and evaluating cancer services in the health care system;
-
to maintain data completeness, timeliness and quality according to the standards of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, WHO (IARC);
-
to monitor trends in cancer incidence;
-
to provide the public, health professionals and scientists with statistical information for education and research.
To serve these purposes we need continuous improvement in efficiency and reliability of data collection. This is achieved by better integration with the information systems of hospitals and laboratories, public and private, and by standardization of the reporting format. Our future success counts on the support of all healthcare professionals and various medical institutions collecting information on cancer patients in Hong Kong.
